Reflections from Halloween at the Ronald McDonald House October 2015

Margaux and Hayden – 29th and 30th October 2015

On the 29th and 30th of October us volunteers went to the Ronald McDonald House. On the first day we decorated the whole house with decorations. It was great to see the kids getting involved too. After the house was dressed for Halloween we started carving jack-o-lanterns. It was a great start to Halloween, everyone got into the spooky spirit. Next we helped decorate fun masks for the kids. They especially loved this part because they could express themselves through craft making. The next day, we bonded even more with the kids. We helped them pick out costumes and decorate them. They even made hats to go with them! And to top it off we made the frosting for the cupcakes we would decorate the next day. Overall the two days were really successful and we all had a blast!

Mia and Sharon – 31st October 2015

Today was our biggest day: we got to see all of the work and preparations of the past two days come together. We arrived at the Ronald McDonald house early afternoon, and were welcomed by the children with open arms, who were happy to see us again. Our first activity involved decorating cupcakes with the yummy frosting we made the day before. All the kids joined in make these delicious frosting and sprinkles covered cupcakes. Afterwards the children disappeared to play outside or in the playroom. Us volunteers relaxed for a bit. Making cupcakes is hard work! Next we made healthy snacks together, the kids took fruit like bananas and apples and made little Halloween monsters. Healthy and fun! Next it was costume time! Chanel, Margaux and Sharon took care of the face makeup while Mia and Rachel took photos of the kids and their families. After all the preparations finally the moment the kids had been waiting for arrived: it was time for trick or treating! They went out and came back with tons of candy. We finished off the night with a wonderful meal with all the kids and their families. We had such a fun and inspiring day. Can’t wait for next year!

QUOTES FROM ERIMTAGE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL CAS STUDENTS

The following teens were volunteers for the Villejuif France -Ronald McDonald House Annual Spring Clean-up, on June 7, 2015. They kindly volunteered at our apatchworks craft corner, doing Wild West themed art projects with children and their families.

Giulia

This has been a day of creativity, music, games and fun for all the children involved and for

us the team of volunteers. For one day, we were all pure children again. I cannot describe

the joy of seeing all the children running around and enjoying a sunny day being involved in all the different and original activities.

Franco

Happiness surrounds us.

In these people I trust,

Coming here again is a must

And if I don’t it’s a bust.

I have seen frowns

Turn to smiles

And smiles turn to laughs

And I have even seen

Someone, with ripped pants

Please mind the ants!

Something that made me happy today; When we were in the horse carriage, a little boy who was in a wheel chair was driving the horse carriage and I saw him laugh, he was happy and this made me happy too!

Elliot

Today was exceptional. We as volunteers were lucky enough to do crafts with the children. Their faces were filled with smiles….

Nina

One of my moments was hearing from one of the girls that came to do the book with me that she was proud of her work and that she wanted me to finish it with her. After 30 minutes, she came back asking me to do another one. She was so happy that I started to be happy as well.  Another thing that came to me was to see the excitement of the volunteers and to see in others what I was feeling, the happiness for being part of this.

The 7th of June 2015 is the day I will never forget. The atmosphere of the Wild West Clean-up Day wasn’t just about the costumes and decorations, it was rather filled with the spirit of the people, regardless of the age, gender or health condition.

Laetitia

One moment that really moved me was when we were helping children make dream catchers. A little girl immediately caught my attention. She had, even though she was only 7, an unbelievable eloquence and very bright and interested eyes. We started talking and she told me how proud she was of her costume. She talked to me about her wig and about her cancer and why she loved being there with us doing art and crafts. I felt very lucky to have met such a strong and brave little girl.

Eloho

Today has been a very filled day but it was also very eye opening. At the beginning of the

day, I saw a boy who just arrived on a wheelchair, possibly from treatment and he was crying because he couldn’t participate in any of the games. But halfway into the day, I saw him participating in other games with a broad smile on his face. This showed me that no matter what our situation might be, we must never underestimate our abilities.

Ania

This day made all the kids and the families forget about their problems and have the time of their lives!
